HC asks Manipur govt to partially lift internet ban in state
Manipur violence: Manipur High Court has ordered the N Biren Singh government to provide internet access to people with leased lines and fibre optic connections in the state plagued by ethnic violence.
On May 3, the government shut down the internet in Manipur after violence erupted between the hill-majority Kuki tribe and the valley-majority Meiteis over the latter's demand for Scheduled Tribes (ST) status.
Many have questioned the effectiveness of the internet restriction, which was intended to reduce the spread of fake information in order to quell the bloodshed. However, gunfire and killings have been ongoing for more than two months.
