PTC Web Desk: At least four persons lost their lives and three others remain missing after a massive landslide, triggered by relentless rainfall, struck the Upper Rimbi region of Sikkim in the early hours of Friday.

The disaster occurred at Yangthang village when boulders and mud crashed into a house while its occupants were asleep. According to police officials, three persons died on the spot, while a fourth victim succumbed to her injuries during treatment at the district hospital.

Senior police officer Tshering Sherpa confirmed that two injured survivors were rescued by constructing a temporary log bridge over the overflowing Hume river. “Despite their evacuation and immediate medical attention, one of the women passed away during treatment, while the other remains in critical condition. Three individuals are still missing,” Sherpa said.

Authorities highlighted that ongoing search and rescue efforts are being hampered by the region’s rugged terrain and persistent adverse weather conditions. Teams are working on ground to trace the missing persons despite the challenges.
