High Court dismisses Punjab's plea challenging BBMB's decision to allocate 8,500 cusecs of water to Haryana

PTC News Desk: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday dismissed the Punjab government's plea challenging BBMB's decision to release additional 8,500 cusecs of water to Haryana.

While rejecting the plea, the court said that the issue had already been heard last year and advised the state government to raise its concerns before the central government.

The Punjab government had challenged BBMB’s decision in the High Court, under which Haryana was to receive an extra 8,500 cusecs of water beyond its share. Punjab argued that Haryana had already used its full quota and should not be given more water.

The state also said that BBMB does not have the legal authority to allocate water to any state beyond its fixed share.

Punjab further alleged that the decision was taken in violation of rules, as the required seven-day notice for the meeting was not given and the agenda was not shared on time.

Additionally, the state had filed a Special Leave Petition (SLP) in the Supreme Court against the High Court’s May 6, 2025 order regarding dam security and water distribution. It also filed a review petition in the High Court, claiming that BBMB had misled the court.
