PTC News desk: Torrential rain has wreaked havoc in Himachal Pradesh, causing landslides, power outages, blocked highways, and damaged bridges. Flash floods have caused major damage in Manali. There is no internet access, electricity, or water. Meanwhile, several tourists have also been stranded.

Himachal Destruction IN POINTS

1. The death toll has risen to 80, with many tourists stranded across the hill state. Since July 8, 31 individuals have died, according to the state disaster management department.


2. According to the data, 24 of the total 80 deaths have been attributed to road accidents, while landslides have claimed 21 lives, followed by falling from heights (12), accidental drowning (7), flash floods (5), electrocution (4), snake bite (2) and others (5).

3. The estimated cost of the damage ranges between 3,000 and 4,000 crore.

4. The government further stated that landslides have closed more than 1,300 routes, including the Chandigarh-Manali and Shimla-Kalka highways.

5. Last night, one-way traffic from Manali to Mandi was opened and over 1,000 stranded tourist vehicles travelled via the route overnight.

6. According to the department, 40 bridges were damaged in the rain fury and schools across the state have been closed until July 15. Over 20,000 people have been evacuated from their homes in the impacted areas.

7. Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu on Tuesday visited Kullu to assess the damage caused by the floods and landslides and said that the situation has improved significantly, but there is still much work to be done.

8. The fourth day of nonstop rain caused severe devastation across North India, with several deaths, landslides, and property loss, with Himachal Pradesh suffering the most.

9. The unprecedented rainfall was caused by the confluence of a western disturbance and monsoonal winds, according to the weather service.

10. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast severe, very heavy, and extremely heavy rainfall in 23 Indian states. Uttarakhand has issued a red alert, and extremely heavy rain is forecast in West Bengal, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya.
