India bans imports from Pakistan as tension flares over Pahalgam terror attack

PTC News Desk: In another significant action, India had banned all kinds of imports from Pakistan as diplomatic relations between both the countries are on the boil following the deadly Pahalgam attacks.

The decision has been taken in the interest of national security and public policy while emphasising that the ban applies to all the products in transit from Pakistan.

"Direct or indirect Import or transit of all goods originating in or exported from Pakistan, whether or not freely importable or otherwise permitted, shall be prohibited with immediate effect, until further orders. This restriction is imposed in the interest of national security and public policy. Any exception to this prohibition shall require prior approval of the Government of India," said a notification by the Commerce Ministry.

Earlier the government had announced closure of Attari-Wagah border, a sole trade route between India and Pakistan amid Pahalgam attack fallout.

The imports from Pakistan mainly consisted of pharma, dry fruits which had also gradually declined in the aftermath of Pulwama as India imposed a 200 % duty on Pakistan products. Reports suggest it was less than 0.0001% of total imports in 2024-25.
