IndiGo flight crisis: Almost out of fuel when landing, after diversion to Chandigarh
PTC News Desk: A passenger's recent account of a harrowing experience aboard a Delhi-bound IndiGo flight has sparked concerns over safety protocols. The incident, which unfolded on Saturday, April 13, involved flight 6E2702 from Ayodhya to Delhi.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Satish Kumar, who shared his ordeal on social media, the flight encountered adverse weather conditions as it neared Delhi. Approximately 15 minutes prior to the scheduled landing time of 4:30 pm, the pilot announced that inclement weather in Delhi would necessitate a diversion.

Despite two unsuccessful attempts to land due to the unfavourable conditions, the pilot reportedly informed passengers that there was 45 minutes of holding fuel available. However, after considerable delay and decision-making, the decision to divert to Chandigarh was made around 5:30 pm.
Kumar recounted the distress among passengers, noting instances of panic-induced vomiting. The flight eventually touched down at Chandigarh Airport at 6:10 pm, a mere 1 or 2 minutes away from completely running out of fuel, as claimed by crew members.

Kumar's social media post, addressing the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Ministry of Civil Aviation, has raised questions about adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and whether the situation constituted a narrow escape.
Retired pilot Shakti Lumba echoed concerns, labeling the incident a severe safety breach and urging the DGCA to conduct an investigation. He emphasised that after two unsuccessful landing attempts, diversion should have been mandatory, not prolonged holding followed by a risky landing.
While some social media users have scrutinised Flightradar data indicating a single missed approach before diversion, the gravity of the situation remains undeniable. As of now, IndiGo has not issued an official statement regarding the alleged incident, leaving passengers and aviation authorities awaiting clarification and reassurance regarding safety measures.
