Gulf crisis: India has lodged a strong diplomatic protest with Iran after an India-flagged commercial vessel reportedly came under fire in the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz, officials said on Saturday.

Sources indicated that the Ministry of External Affairs has called in the Iranian Ambassador to formally convey New Delhi’s “serious concern and displeasure” over the incident. The government is also expected to seek an explanation from Tehran regarding the circumstances in which Iranian forces allegedly opened fire on civilian shipping.

According to officials familiar with the matter, the key question raised by India is under what authority such action was taken against vessels navigating one of the world’s busiest and most sensitive maritime routes.

Vessel Forced to Change Course

Government sources confirmed that the India-flagged ship was among those affected during the episode. While no injuries or damage have been reported, the vessel was compelled to alter its course after gunfire was reported in the area.

The firing is believed to have involved units of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, though detailed information on the sequence of events is still being sought.

Safety Measures Under Review

Authorities said the Directorate General of Shipping is closely tracking developments and is in touch with relevant stakeholders to ensure the safety of Indian crew members and vessels operating in the region.

Officials reiterated that the protection of Indian seafarers remains a top priority, particularly in high-risk zones like the Gulf.

Rising Tensions in a Key Oil Route

The incident comes against the backdrop of escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint through which nearly 20% of the world’s oil supply passes. The region has witnessed increased military activity in recent days, with Iran tightening its control amid a standoff with the United States.

Several vessels have reportedly faced disruptions, with some being forced to retreat after encountering hostile conditions.
