Jammu Kashmir: Two soldiers martyred as Operation Akhal in Kulgam enters Day 9 with heavy gunfire

PTC Web Desk: Two Indian Army soldiers were martyred in an intense encounter with terrorists in Kulgam district as Operation Akhal entered its ninth day on Saturday. Officials confirmed that two more security personnel sustained injuries in overnight crossfire, bringing the total number of injured to 10 in one of the Valley’s longest-running anti-terror operations.

According to security sources, more than five terrorists have been eliminated since the operation began on August 1. The encounter was launched after specific intelligence inputs indicated the presence of heavily armed militants in the dense forest area of Akhal in South Kashmir.

Security forces have pressed drones, helicopters, and para commandos into service to track and neutralise the remaining militants. The terrorists, believed to be affiliated with Lashkar-e-Taiba, are reported to be equipped with advanced night-vision devices and long-range rifles, making the encounter particularly challenging.

The forested terrain has echoed with gunfire and explosions over the past nine days, with clashes continuing both day and night. Officials said the operation will persist until all threats are eliminated.

The prolonged gun battle has prompted residents of Akhal village to evacuate to safer areas. Women and children have been the most affected, with many traumatised by the unending exchange of fire and blasts.

Authorities have appointed nodal officers to provide assistance to displaced residents and coordinate emergency responses. Medical teams and relief services are also on standby to support civilians and security personnel in the affected area.

Operation Akhal has emerged as one of the most prolonged anti-terror missions in Jammu and Kashmir in recent years.  The Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police have reiterated their commitment to eradicating militancy in the region, ensuring peace, and safeguarding the civilian population.
