JN.1 scare: Chandigarh makes wearing of face masks compulsory at public places amid JN.1 sub-variant spread

Covid scare in Chandigarh: Amid rising Covid cases in the state attributed to the new sub-strain JN.1, the Chandigarh administration made the wearing of masks compulsory in public places.

According to the orders issued by the health department, "all the residents of UT Chandigarh are advised to bear face masks in the crowded places." The order further states that the wearing of masks must be especially ensured in the closed environments like - during the whole journey in the public transport (like buses, trains, aircraft and taxis etc); during stay inside cinema halls, shopping malls and departmental stores etc; during stay inside classrooms, office rooms, indoor gatherings.


India on Thursday witnessed an uptick in Covid-19 cases, with 358 fresh infections recorded in the past 24 hours, with total number of cases reaching to 21 cases from across the country.

  • JN.1 was found in the United States for the first time in September 2023. As of December 8, the public health department of the United States estimates that the variation JN.1 accounts for 15-29% of all cases in the country.

  • It is currently the fastest-growing variety in the United States.
