PTC Web Desk: The sacred ‘Jore Sahib’, the footwear of Guru Gobind Singh and his wife Mata Sahib Kaur,  is set to find a permanent home in the national capital, where devotees will be able to pay their respects in large numbers.

Union Minister for Oil and Petroleum Hardeep Puri met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday to request that the holy relics be placed in a suitable location. The Puri family, which has preserved the ‘Jore Sahib’ for over 300 years, has decided to entrust them to a place where the Sikh community can offer prayers and obeisance freely.

As the eldest member of the Puri family, Hardeep Puri took the initiative to ensure the relics are preserved properly. Along with a committee of respected Sikh leaders, he submitted recommendations to the Prime Minister regarding the safekeeping and respectful display of the ‘Jore Sahib’.

In a statement, Puri explained that the relics include a right-foot footwear of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, measuring 11 inches by 3½ inches, and a left-foot footwear of Mata Sahib Kaur Ji, measuring 9 inches by 3 inches. He added, “The Puri family has been blessed to serve these holy relics since they were given to our ancestors by Guru Gobind Singh Ji and Mata Sahib Kaur Ji over three centuries ago.”

He further recalled that the family ancestor received divine permission from Guru Gobind Singh Ji to retain the relics, ensuring the blessings of the Guru would remain with their family for generations.

The last custodian of the ‘Jore Sahib’ was Puri’s late cousin, Jasmeet Puri, who lived in Karol Bagh, Delhi, on a street now named ‘Guru Gobind Singh Marg’ in honour of the relics. Following Jasmeet Puri’s passing, his wife Manpreet wrote to Hardeep Puri, urging him to find a proper home for the sacred footwear so that more devotees could pay homage.

The Ministry of Culture has carefully examined the relics, including carbon testing, to confirm their authenticity and religious significance. The committee has presented its recommendations to the Prime Minister, who has expressed his respect for Sikh teachings and his support for the faithful in preserving these holy relics.

The ‘Jore Sahib’ is expected to be installed in one of the major gurdwaras in Delhi, allowing devotees from across the country to pay their respects and seek blessings.
