Justice Surya Kant sworn in as 53rd Chief Justice Of India, succeeds Justice BR Gavai
PTC News Desk: Justice Surya Kant was sworn in on Monday as the 53rd Chief Justice of India, starting what will be a nearly 15-month term in the country’s top judicial post. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath, and several leaders—including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla—were present.
He took over the role from Justice Bhushan R. Gavai, after being officially appointed under Article 124(2) of the Constitution based on the former Chief Justice’s recommendation.
Justice Surya Kant will serve until February 9, 2027, when he turns 65.
Born on February 10, 1962, in Haryana, he began practising law in Hisar in 1984 and later moved to Chandigarh to work at the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Throughout his career, he handled various constitutional, service-related, and civil cases, representing many institutions such as universities, boards, corporations, banks, and even the High Court. He became Haryana’s youngest Advocate General in 2000, was made a senior advocate in 2001, and became a permanent judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on January 9, 2004.
He went on to serve as Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court from October 2018 before being elevated to the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019.
