Know all the 14 Opposition MPs were suspended from Lok Sabha for disregarding the chair

New Delhi, December 14: During proceedings chaired by Bhartruhari Mahtab, BJD MP from Cuttack, the Lok Sabha witnessed the suspension of 14 opposition MPs, including prominent figures like DMK's Kanimozhi Karunanidhi and Congress' Manickam Tagore. Their suspension for the Parliament Winter session ensued from their defiance of the chair's directives and disruption of parliamentary activities.

The suspended members include Benny Behanan, VK Sreekandan, Mohammad Jawed, PR Natarajan, Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, K Subbarayan, SR Parthiban, S Venkatesan, Manickam Tagore, Dean Kuriakose, Hibi Eden, TN Prathapan, Jothimani Sennimalai, and Ramya Haridas.

Pralhad Joshi, the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, initiated the resolution for the suspension of the initial five MPs. The resolution highlighted their misconduct and disregard for the House and its authority, leading to their suspension for the session. Subsequently, an additional nine MPs faced suspension for the ongoing session. Bhartruhari Mahtab chaired the proceedings during the adoption of these resolutions.

The Opposition's demand for Union Home Minister Amit Shah's resignation stemmed from a security breach in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, escalating tensions within the House.

Who are the suspended MPs?

  1. Kanimozhi Karunanidhi: Representing Thoothukkudi in Tamil Nadu's Lok Sabha, Kanimozhi, daughter of former Tamil Nadu CM M Karunanidhi, previously served in the Rajya Sabha from 2007-2019.
  2. Manickam Tagore: An MP from Virudhunagar in Tamil Nadu, Tagore earlier served the constituency in the 15th Lok Sabha from 2009 to 2014.

  5. Mohammad Jawed: Elected from Bihar's Kishanganj, Jawed, a former working president of Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee, holds extensive legislative experience.
  6. SR Parthiban: Representing Salem in Tamil Nadu's Lok Sabha, Parthiban formerly served as an MLA in the state assembly.

  8. Benny Behanan: Chalakudy's Congress MP, Behanan, a former MLA, held crucial roles in Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee.
  9. K Subbarayan: An MP representing Tiruppur, Subbarayan, a CPI member, has a long-standing political career, previously representing Coimbatore in the Lok Sabha.

  14. Jothimani Sennimalai: MP from Karur, Tamil Nadu, Jothimani, a young politician and writer, has held significant roles in the Indian Youth Congress.

The recent suspension follows the suspension of TMC's Rajya Sabha MP Derek O'Brien for disruptive behaviour in the upper house of Parliament. Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar took this action for the session's remainder after a motion was brought forth by the Leader of the House, Piyush Goyal.

During ongoing Lok Sabha proceedings, two intruders breached security from the visitors' gallery, entering the chamber. They proceeded to release a smoke canister before being restrained by present MPs. This security breach has drawn criticism from the opposition, who demand a statement from Home Minister Amit Shah and action against BJP MP Pratap Simha for recommending the duo's access pass to Lok Sabha.
