Kolkata sexual assault: Security guard arrested had ignored woman's pleas; 4 arrests so far
PTC News Desk: The Kolkata police on Saturday arrested a security guard of South Kolkata Law College in connection with the sexual assault case of a first-year student in the college premises.
The preliminary investigation indicates that security guard Pinaki Banerjee, was present at the time of the gang-rape. Acting on the accused's instructions, he left his guard room, leaving the woman alone. The police said that despite the victim's repeated pleas, the security guards did not assist her.
On June 25, a 24-year-old student was brutally assaulted for several hours inside the security guard’s room by the main accused, Monojit Mishra—a former president of the college’s Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad unit and reportedly the organisational secretary of the TMC student wing’s south Kolkata branch.
Two current students were also present during the incident but did nothing to stop it.
The incident came to light on Friday, triggering widespread outrage and condemnation.
The woman alleged that the college's main gate was locked during the assault, and although the security guard was present, he was instructed to wait outside the room and did not intervene.
