Lok Sabha Elections: Re-polling underway at 11 booths in Manipur following Phase 1 violence

Imphal (Manipur): Re-polling commenced at 11 polling stations within the inner-Manipur Parliamentary constituency of the northeastern state on Monday, as ordered by the Election Commission. This decision came in response to incidents of violence reported during the Lok Sabha elections on April 19.

Violence erupted at these polling stations in Manipur last Friday, with reports of miscreants opening fire and vandalising Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). In light of these disturbances, security has been heightened at all polling stations to ensure the smooth conduct of re-polling.

Local residents expressed their determination to cast their votes amidst the heightened security measures. Manipur witnessed a voter turnout of 69.18 per cent by 7 pm on the day of the initial polling.

The affected polling stations where re-polling is taking place include Moirangkampu Sajeb Upper Primary School and S. Ibobi Primary School (East Wing) in the Khurai assembly constituency, four in Kshetrigao, one in Thongju, three in Uripok, and one in Konthoujam.

During the incidents of violence on April 19, one civilian sustained injuries from gunfire, and clashes were reported at a polling booth in Moirangkampu Sajeb Awang Leikai of Imphal. Notably, all 32 assembly segments of the inner Manipur parliamentary constituency and 15 assembly segments of the outer Manipur (ST) parliamentary constituency participated in the Lok Sabha elections.

The voting for the remaining 13 segments of Outer Manipur is scheduled for the second phase on April 26, with the counting of votes set for June 4.
