Love Jihad arrest warning: Assam Congress Chief's Lord Krishna parallel under scrutiny

Guwahati, July 28: Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, expressed strong disapproval and condemnation towards the Assam Pradesh Congress President, Bhupen Kumar Borah, for equating Lord Krishna and Rukmini's relationship to the controversial concept of "Love Jihad." The Chief Minister stated that it is unfortunate that such a comparison was made and asserted that if a formal complaint is lodged against Borah, appropriate action will be taken.

The controversy arose when Borah responded to the Chief Minister's remarks about a recent triple murder in Golaghat, Assam, which was labeled as a case of "Love Jihad" by right-wing politicians.

The term "Love Jihad" is often used to allege a campaign by Muslim men to convert Hindu women by seducing them. However, Mr. Borah took the matter a step further by drawing parallels between the marriages of Lord Krishna and Rukmini, and Dhritarashtra and Gandhari, as mentioned in the epic Mahabharata, and the concept of "Love Jihad."

According to Borah, historical interfaith marriages, including those among royalty since the time of Mahabharata, can also be considered as instances of "Love Jihad." He cited the example of Gandhari's family's objections to her marriage with Dhritarashtra, and how Lord Krishna's marriage to Rukmini was met with resistance from Arjun. However, these claims sparked controversy and faced severe backlash from various quarters.

Chief Minister Sarma firmly criticized Mr. Borah for dragging Lord Krishna into the contentious issue of "Love Jihad," stating that it is against the principles of Sanatan Dharma and Hindu Dharma. He urged Mr. Borah not to bring Lord Krishna into such controversies, just as one should refrain from involving figures like Hajrat Mohammad or Jesus Christ in any religious disputes.

Moreover, Chief Minister Sarma clarified the concept of "Love Jihad," explaining that it involves deceitfully marrying a girl using false identity and later coercing her to change her religion. He pointed out that Lord Krishna never asked Rukmini to change her faith, making it inappropriate to associate their marriage with the term "Love Jihad."

In the context of the recent triple murder, Chief Minister Sarma labeled it as a clear case of "Love Jihad." The perpetrator, Nazibur Rahman Bora, a 25-year-old man, allegedly belonged to the Muslim community, while the victims were from a Hindu family. It was reported that the accused initially presented himself with a Hindu name on social media and that the couple faced various issues, including the woman's alleged involvement with drugs when they lived in Kolkata.

To conclude, the remarks made by the Assam Pradesh Congress President, Bhupen Kumar Borah, equating Lord Krishna and Rukmini's marriage to the controversial notion of "Love Jihad," have stirred strong reactions from the Assam Chief Minister and the public alike. The incident highlights the sensitivity surrounding the "Love Jihad" concept and its potential implications on interfaith relations in the region.
