' Darling, have arranged two papers for you': Lucknow varsity professor held after student alleges harassment

PTC Web Desk: A Lucknow University assistant professor has been taken into police custody after a woman student accused him of harassment and allegedly offering leaked examination papers in exchange for personal meetings.

The case surfaced after audio recordings submitted by the student to the university administration allegedly captured objectionable conversations between the professor and the student ahead of examinations.

In one of the recordings, the professor can allegedly be heard telling the student, “Darling, I have arranged two papers for you. When are you coming to meet me?”

The student replies, “Sir, I have already completed my studies and syllabus.”

The professor then allegedly insists, “So you won’t come even once?”

To this, the student responds that she has responsibilities at home and would “try” to come. The professor is then heard saying, “Don’t try. Come before the exams, within seven days.”

According to the student, the repeated calls and pressure from the professor were linked to demands for personal favours. In another clip submitted to the authorities, the student allegedly says after disconnecting the call that she feared being harassed again if she visited him.

The accused has been identified as Paramjit Singh, an assistant professor in the university’s zoology department. The complainant is a B Sc student.

Following the complaint, the university’s Controller of Examinations approached the police, while the administration constituted an inquiry committee to probe both the alleged harassment and possible examination malpractice.

Police officials confirmed that the professor was detained for questioning. However, he denied the allegations and claimed he was being framed due to internal disputes within the university.

The matter triggered protests on the campus, with activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) demanding strict action. Student leaders urged the university administration and the police to invoke stringent provisions related to sexual harassment and examination integrity.

ABVP Lucknow University unit president Jai Srivastava said strong action should be taken if any attempt was made to misuse leaked papers or exploit students.

The university administration said the institution treats such complaints seriously and assured that strict action would follow if the allegations are found to be true. Vice Chancellor JP Saini has directed the Internal Complaints Committee to submit its report within 24 hours.

University officials earlier stated that statements of the accused professor, the complainant and several students had been recorded at the proctor’s office as part of the inquiry process.
