Maharashtra TET paper leak: Prime accused on the run for months arrested from Bihar

PTC News Desk: The alleged mastermind of the Maharashtra Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) paper leak, Bijendra Gupta, has been arrested by Maharashtra Police in Bihar after being on the run for several days, officials said.

Gupta, who is accused of being involved in several exam paper leak cases across India, had been avoiding arrest despite police raids at multiple locations in Bihar. Another accused was also arrested along with him.

His arrest comes just days after Maharashtra Police detained several people in the TET paper leak case, including his wife, Suman Gupta. However, Bijendra Gupta had managed to escape, leading to a large search operation across states.

Gupta came into the spotlight in 2024 after an undercover investigation by India Today following the NEET paper leak. During the sting operation, he allegedly explained how paper leak networks worked and pointed out weaknesses in the National Testing Agency's (NTA) examination system that were allegedly used to leak question papers.

Police believe Gupta played a major role in several exam paper leak cases across the country. He is expected to be brought to Maharashtra on transit remand for further questioning. Investigators are also looking into his alleged connections with other paper leak gangs operating in different states.

Earlier Arrests in the Case

Earlier, police arrested Gupta's wife, Suman Gupta, from Bihar. Investigators suspect she knew about the paper leak racket and that several financial transactions related to the syndicate took place in her presence. Police are also investigating whether properties in Delhi and Patna were bought using money earned from the alleged paper leak operation.

On July 3, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) also arrested three more accused — Kapil Dahiya, Mithun Singh, and Sonu Singh. According to investigators, Kapil Dahiya, from Haryana's Sonipat district, allegedly travelled to Mumbai to find buyers for the leaked TET question papers. Mithun Singh, arrested in Bihar, is accused of travelling to Pune to distribute the leaked papers and is believed to have close links with the main network.
