Manipur violence escalates: Meitei man who went to meet Kuki wife abducted, shot dead by armed men

PTC News Desk: In another grim episode linked to Manipur’s ongoing ethnic unrest, a 38-year-old Meitei man was abducted by unidentified armed individuals in Churachandpur district and later shot dead. A shocking video, reportedly capturing the victim begging for his life moments before the killing, has gone viral, triggering a police probe.

The incident took place in Churachandpur, a major flashpoint in the state’s prolonged ethnic conflict, and came to public attention late on Wednesday. The district Superintendent of Police said authorities learned of the crime after the video began circulating on social media. The footage shows the man sitting on a dimly lit roadside, hands folded as he repeatedly pleads before at least two armed men. Despite his appeals, one attacker shoots him at close range, killing him instantly.

The victim has been identified as Mayanglambam Rishikanta, a resident of Kakching district. He was married to a Kuki woman from Churachandpur and had adopted a tribal name, Ginminthang. Officials said he had recently returned from Nepal, where he works, and was in Churachandpur on short leave.

Since ethnic violence erupted in May 2023, Meitei and Kuki communities have largely avoided entering each other’s areas, deepening divisions across Manipur. The conflict has so far claimed over 260 lives and displaced thousands of people.
