Manipur women paraded naked: Could not protect my wife despite being ex-Army man, says husband of one of victims
Imphal, July 21: A Kargil war veteran, whose wife was one of the two women paraded naked and molested by a group of men in Manipur, has expressed his anguish over not being able to protect his wife from such a humiliating ordeal, despite having served in defense of the country.
The incident, which has triggered nationwide condemnation, came to public attention when a video filmed on May 4 went viral on Wednesday evening.
The victim's husband, a retired Subedar of the Assam Regiment in the Indian Army, expressed his profound disappointment to a Hindi news channel. He revealed his dedicated service in the Kargil war and as part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force in Sri Lanka, emphasising his commitment to protecting the nation. However, he rued that despite his efforts, he could not safeguard his home, his wife, and his fellow villagers from the distressing incident, leaving him feeling deeply saddened and depressed.
He recounted the harrowing events of the fateful morning on May 4, when a violent mob set several houses in the locality ablaze. The mob then subjected the two women to a horrifying ordeal, forcibly disrobing them and humiliatingly parading them on the village paths in front of the gathered crowd.
He accused the police of inaction despite being present during the incident. He demanded that all those involved in burning the houses and subjecting the women to humiliation should be given exemplary punishment for their heinous actions.
Notably, four persons have been arrested in connection with the case on Thursday, a day after the video surfaced.
