Monsoon picks up pace after prolonged pause, IMD forecasts rain across Central India

Monsoon update: After nearly two weeks of slow progress, the southwest monsoon is finally showing signs of becoming active again. Weather experts say rain-bearing clouds are expected to strengthen over Central India, bringing much-needed rainfall to several regions facing a shortage of rain.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), scattered rainfall is likely in Chhattisgarh, East and West Madhya Pradesh, and Vidarbha between June 19 and June 25.

The forecast comes as a relief for farmers and residents in these areas, where the monsoon had slowed down despite arriving on time. Many places have experienced hot weather and clear skies instead of the usual seasonal rains. The lack of rainfall has also raised concerns about kharif crop sowing.

The IMD has predicted thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds across several parts of Central India over the next few days. West Madhya Pradesh is expected to witness thunderstorms and winds of up to 60 kmph between June 21 and June 23. Similar weather conditions are likely in East Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha until June 23.

Chhattisgarh is also expected to receive thunderstorms and lightning from June 19 to June 23, with stronger weather activity forecast on June 22 and June 23.

Before widespread rainfall arrives, some areas may experience intense pre-monsoon storms. The IMD has warned of strong winds reaching up to 70 kmph in parts of Madhya Pradesh on June 19 and June 20.

Meanwhile, southern states are expected to continue receiving heavy rainfall. Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal may see heavy rain until June 21, while Kerala and Mahe are likely to receive heavy showers through June 23.

The Karnataka coast is also expected to receive significant rainfall between June 21 and June 25. Heavy showers are likely in both North and South Interior Karnataka on June 22 and June 23. Lakshadweep may also experience heavy rain on June 21.

The latest forecast suggests that the monsoon is gradually regaining strength and could soon advance further across the country, bringing more widespread rainfall in the coming days.
