Mumbai airport's runways closed today for 6 hours | Check details
Mumbai, October 17: The Mumbai International Airport, also known as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), is set to temporarily suspend flight operations for a six-hour period on Tuesday. This suspension is a result of post-monsoon maintenance work scheduled for the airport's two runways. The maintenance activities are planned to occur from 11 am to 5 pm.
A spokesperson for CSMIA stated, "As part of CSMIA's comprehensive post-monsoon runway maintenance plan, both runways - RWY 09/27 and RWY 14/32 - will be temporarily non-operational on October 17. This scheduled temporary closure is part of CSMIA's annual post-monsoon preventive maintenance plan. A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) has also been duly issued in this regard six months in advance."
Notably, Mumbai Airport typically handles around 900 flights per day.
The temporary closure of flight operations is necessary to conduct essential repair and maintenance activities aimed at upholding the airport's infrastructure to the highest standards. CSMIA emphasized that this annual post-monsoon runway maintenance is part of a meticulous series of activities aimed at ensuring operational continuity and passenger safety. It aligns with the airport's commitment to a passenger-first approach in its operations.
The airport has collaborated with key stakeholders to efficiently schedule flights, aiming to ensure a smooth completion of the maintenance process. The CSMIA seeks the cooperation and support of passengers during this period.
In a separate development, the Mumbai International Airport reported a remarkable 33% growth in passenger traffic during the September quarter. This growth is compared to the pre-pandemic period in Q3CY2019 and signifies a significant 109% increase in traffic.
During the last quarter, the airport witnessed 60,861 domestic air traffic movements (ATMs) and 20,438 international ATMs. In the same period of the previous year, the airport recorded a total passenger volume of 96 lakh, reflecting a steady recovery in air travel.
