PTC Web Desk: Tahawwur Hussain Rana, one of the key accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, has been extradited to India from the United States. A special flight landed in New Delhi around 6.30 pm on Thursday.
Upon arrival, Rana will be taken into custody by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which is overseeing his case. Sources indicate that he will be lodged in a high-security ward within Delhi's Tihar Jail, given the gravity of the charges against him.
Rana is being accompanied by a select team of intelligence and investigative officers during his transfer. Following his arrival, he is likely to be produced before a special NIA court at Delhi’s Patiala House complex, where proceedings will begin under tight security.
Accused of Orchestrating 26/11 Mumbai Attacks
Rana is considered one of the masterminds behind the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks that killed over 200 people and left hundreds injured. The attacks, which targeted prominent locations across Mumbai, remain one of the deadliest terrorist incidents in India’s history.
What Led to Tahawwur Rana's Arrest?
Rana’s arrest stems largely from the testimony of David Coleman Headley (alias Dawood Gilani), a key co-conspirator in the attacks. Headley was arrested on October 3, 2009, and his detailed confessions during interrogation proved crucial in establishing Rana’s involvement.
According to Headley, Rana played a vital role by facilitating travel documents and providing logistical and financial support for his missions in India. He reportedly helped Headley set up an immigration consultancy firm, which was then used as a cover for conducting surveillance of intended targets in Mumbai.
Headley's statements were instrumental in exposing Rana’s complicity in planning and aiding the attacks, ultimately leading to his arrest and now, his extradition to India to face trial.
