North India braces for heavy rain as IMD sounds alert; Punjab flood situation worsens
PTC Web Desk: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall alert for several states, warning of severe weather conditions in the coming days. According to IMD, parts of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Jammu are likely to witness heavy downpours on Thursday, accompanied by thunderstorms.
Landslide risk in hill state
The IMD has cautioned that continuous heavy rainfall may trigger landslides in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, urging residents of hilly regions to remain vigilant. Forecasts indicate that scattered to heavy rainfall will continue over Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, eastern Rajasthan, and Haryana over the next seven days.
In Uttarakhand, an intense rain warning has been issued for August 28–29 and September 1–2, raising the risk of flash floods and landslides.
Region-wise forecast
Jammu & Kashmir and Punjab: Rainfall is expected on August 27 and again from August 30 to September 1.
Western Rajasthan: Rainfall is predicted between August 29–31.
Uttar Pradesh: Heavy rainfall likely on September 1–2.
Bihar: Intense rain forecast from August 30 to September 1.
Jharkhand: Showers expected on August 29–30.
Chhattisgarh and Odisha: Very heavy rainfall on August 27–28.
The IMD has further warned of light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning across many regions during this period.
Southern and Northeastern India also affected
From August 27–29, parts of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and interior Karnataka are expected to receive heavy showers. In the northeast, Arunachal Pradesh will witness heavy rainfall from August 28–30, while Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura will continue to receive consistent rainfall for the next week.
Alert for Jammu & Kashmir
In Jammu and adjoining regions, the IMD has warned of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and hailstorms in districts, including RS Pura, Samba, Akhnoor, Nagrota, Kot Bhalwal, Bishnah, Vijaypur, Purmandal, Kathua, and Udhampur. Moderate rainfall has already been reported in Reasi, Ramban, Doda, Billawar, Katra, Ramnagar, Hiranagar, Gool, and Banihal.
Flood situation worsens in Punjab
Punjab is facing a deepening flood crisis after continuous rainfall over the past two days. In Kapurthala district, floodwaters have inundated large tracts of land, while in Ferozepur, villagers near riverbanks have begun evacuating low-lying areas.
The release of excess water from Pong and Bhakra dams, combined with heavy rains, has caused water levels in the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers to rise rapidly. Seasonal rivulets and drains are also overflowing, worsening the situation. Overflow of the Beas River has submerged large stretches of farmland, while water levels between Harike and Hussainiwala in Ferozepur district have risen significantly, intensifying fears of widespread flooding.
Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable regions to remain alert and take precautionary measures as heavy rainfall is expected to continue across multiple states in the coming days.
