Parliament security breach | All you need to know about colour gas canisters that spread panic in LS

New Delhi, December 13: In a significant breach of security at Parliament on Wednesday, two persons leaped into the Lok Sabha chamber from the public gallery, releasing yellow smoke from canisters and causing turmoil within the House. Security measures were swiftly enacted, and the intruders were overpowered by vigilant MPs and security personnel.

Footage captured inside the chamber depicts one individual scrambling over desks while the other disperses a dense yellowish mist from the visitors' gallery. The quick response of MPs and security personnel led to the apprehension of both individuals.

What are colour gas canisters?

The canisters used, emitting coloured smoke, are commonly known as smoke bombs or smoke cans. These items are legally available in most countries and serve various purposes. Military forces utilise smoke grenades to create smoke screens, providing cover during operations and obscuring troop movements from adversaries. Similarly, civilians use them for photography effects or during sports events to display team colours, notably seen in European football where fan clubs employ them to enhance stadium atmosphere.

Two others detained outside Parliament

Outside the Parliament, other other individuals, Neelam (42) and Amol Shinde (25), were detained for protesting with containers emitting yellow smoke near the Transport Bhawan, prompting an ongoing police investigation.

Following the incident, Speaker Om Birla assured parliamentarians of an investigation into the matter. "The released smoke poses no significant threat, and I am personally present here with you all. Let's await further details as the investigation progresses."

The Lok Sabha session resumed at 2 pm after the incident.
