PTC News Desk: The chief judicial magistrate in Pithoragarh penalised and sentenced three people, including the assistant manager of Patanjali Ayurved Ltd, to six months in prison after Patanjali's food product failed a quality test at a testing facility in Uttarakhand's Rudrapur.

In 2019, a food safety inspector expressed concern regarding Patanjali Navratna Elaichi Soan Papdi at Lila Dhar Pathak's shop in the main bazaar of Berinag, Pithoragarh.

After this, samples of the sweet were gathered, and notices were sent to Kanaha Ji Distributor, Ramnagar, and Patanjali Ayurved Ltd, Haridwar. In December 2020, the Rudrapur testing laboratory notified the state food safety authorities of the sweet's subpar quality. Cases were filed against businessman Lila Dhar Pathak, distributor Ajay Joshi, and Patanjali assistant manager Abhishek Kumar. The three people were fined Rs 5,000, Rs 10,000, and Rs 25,000, and sentenced to six months in prison.

Meanwhile, in a recent development, the Supreme Court asked Patanjali Ayurved Ltd if the sale of its 14 products had ceased after the Uttarakhand State Licencing Authority suspended their manufacturing licences last month. Senior counsel Balbir Singh, representing Patanjali, informed the Supreme Court that they have discontinued the sale of these items.
