Priya Sachdev Kapur files Rs 20 crore defamation suit against sister-in-law in Delhi High Court

PTC Web Desk:  Priya Sachdev Kapur, widow of late industrialist Sunjay Kapur, has approached the Delhi High Court with a Rs 20 crore defamation suit against her sister-in-law Mandhira Kapur Smith and a podcast host, alleging damage to her reputation.

The civil suit was filed on Thursday. Priya has sought compensation of Rs 20 crore, claiming that certain remarks made about her in a podcast and later circulated on social media caused her mental agony and public humiliation. The podcast in question, hosted by Pooja Chaudhri, allegedly carried statements that Priya has described as defamatory.

According to the plea, the content was not limited to the podcast episode but was also shared across interviews, social media platforms and other online channels, amplifying its reach. Priya has requested the court to restrain the defendants from publishing or sharing any further statements against her and to direct the removal of the existing material from digital platforms.

Apart from the civil suit, Priya has also initiated criminal defamation proceedings against Mandhira Kapur Smith and another individual. The legal action comes amid an ongoing dispute over the estate of Sunjay Kapur, who passed away in London in June 2025. In August, actor Karisma Kapoor, Sunjay’s former wife, moved court on behalf of their children, alleging that a will submitted by Priya is forged and excludes them from their rightful inheritance. Sunjay and Karisma were married from 2003 to 2016 and have two children, Kiaan Raj and Samara.

Priya, who married Sunjay in 2017 and has a son with him, has denied the allegations. Sunjay’s mother, Rani Kapur, is also involved in the separate legal proceedings related to the estate.
