PTC Web Desk: Pune farmer Ishwar Gayakar has raked in more than Rs 2.8 crore by selling tomatoes amid soaring prices.
Ishwar Gayakar proudly shared his success story, stating that he cultivated tomatoes on 12 acres of land this year and managed to sell approximately 17,000 crates. The crates were sold at varying prices ranging from Rs 770 to Rs 23,110 per crate, contributing to his impressive earnings
Determined to further capitalise on their success, 36-year-old Ishwar Gayakar and his wife, originally from Junnar taluka in Pune, have set their sights on a new goal. The farmer couple aims to achieve a whopping Rs 3.5 crore in earnings, utilising their existing stock of approximately 4,000 crates of tomatoes.
Speaking about his hard work throughout the years, Ishwar Gaikar said, "This is not something I have earned in one day. I have been cultivating tomatoes on my 12-acre farm for the last six-seven years now. I have also incurred losses several times, but I have never left my hopes. In 2021, I had made a loss of Rs 18-20 lakh, but I did not stop."
Speaking about his profits, this year, Gaikar said, "This year, I have cultivated tomatoes on 12 acres and till today, I have sold around 17,000 crates priced between Rs 770 to Rs 2311 per crate. So in total, I have earned Rs 2.8 crore till now."
"I still have a stock of around 3,000 to 4,000 crates of tomatoes at my farm. So if you calculate, my total earnings this year would go up to around Rs 3.5 crore," he added.
Expressing gratitude for his achievement, Gaikar acknowledged the support and involvement of his wife, as well as the blessings from his parents and grandparents. He attributed his success to their combined efforts, stating, "I believe that the blessings of my parents and grandparents, along with the dedicated work of my wife on the farm, have contributed to this success. The entire family is delighted with the favourable prices we received for our tomatoes."
Gaikar shared that he thought that he would get around Rs 30 per kg by selling tomatoes, but his fortunes turned this season. "Before this season, I had in my mind that I would get around Rs 30 per kg for the price of tomatoes, but it turned out to be a bumper lottery for me this time," he said.
Pune farmer Ishwar Gayakar has been actively engaged in farming since 2005, taking over the family's agricultural pursuits from his father. Currently, he operates the farm alongside his wife. Initially, they cultivated tomatoes on a modest 1-acre plot of land. However, since 2017, with the availability of labour, he has expanded his tomato cultivation to cover 12 acres. In addition to tomatoes, he also cultivates onions and flowers during their respective seasons.
