'No food is to be thrown in open areas': SC issues circular to curb stray dog menace within premises
PTC Web Desk: A day after passing a contentious order on stray dog management, the Supreme Court on Tuesday released a circular addressing the rising number of stray dogs seen in and around its complex. “It has been observed that incidents of stray dogs roaming in corridors and even inside lifts in the Supreme Court Complex have increased significantly,” the circular stated, directing that the new measures be enforced immediately.
The guidelines stress strict disposal of leftover food, specifying that all food waste must be placed in properly covered dustbins. No food is to be thrown in open areas or uncovered containers to prevent attracting animals. The court noted that this step is vital to reduce the risk of dog bites and to maintain hygiene standards.
To tackle the issue, Supreme Court officials recently held discussions with representatives from the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
This development follows Monday’s Supreme Court order instructing civic bodies in Delhi-NCR to promptly capture, sterilise, and permanently relocate stray dogs to shelters. Describing the matter as “serious,” the court emphasised that there must be “no compromise” in the implementation of the drive.
The directive has sparked sharp criticism from animal rights activists. Earlier in the day, the Delhi Police stopped a group of protesters at India Gate citing security concerns and later registered an FIR against them.
