PTC Web Desk: Tesla has officially marked its entry into the Indian automotive market with the launch of its first showroom at Maker Maxity Mall in Mumbai's upscale Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). The showroom opens to the public on Tuesday, offering Indian customers their first official glimpse of Tesla’s electric vehicles.

This development represents a significant milestone for Elon Musk's EV giant as it begins operations in one of the world's fastest-growing electric vehicle markets.

The Mumbai showroom will serve as Tesla’s flagship retail and experience centre in India. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the vehicles firsthand and learn more about Tesla's cutting-edge EV technology.

Tesla model Y price in India

Tesla will begin its India operations with the launch of the Model Y SUV. As per Tesla’s official website, the rear-wheel-drive variant of the Model Y is priced at Rs 60 lakh for customers opting for upfront payment. The long-range version is slightly higher, priced at Rs 68 lakh.

These prices are significantly steeper compared to Tesla’s pricing in markets like the United States, where the Model Y starts at $44,990. In China, the price is around 263,500 yuan, and in Germany, the starting price is 45,970 euros. The higher cost in India is primarily due to high import duties, as the vehicles are being sold as completely built units (CBUs).

Tesla’s Model Y SUVs for India will be imported from its Gigafactory in Shanghai, which supplies vehicles to several international markets. The company has already brought in six units of the Model Y for display and test drives at the Mumbai showroom.

In addition to vehicles, Tesla has imported Supercharger stations and accessories worth nearly $1 million. These products have largely been sourced from China and the US and are expected to be deployed in and around Mumbai to support the brand’s initial customer base.

Tesla is also in the process of setting up a dedicated service centre in Kurla West, Mumbai, which will provide after-sales service and maintenance support.

This retail launch comes after years of anticipation and follows Tesla’s prior groundwork in India, which includes a registered office in Bengaluru and an engineering centre in Pune.

To create buzz ahead of the showroom opening, Tesla’s India-specific handle on X (formerly Twitter) posted a teaser last Friday reading “Coming soon,” accompanied by a visual that hinted at a July 2025 launch.

Depending on consumer response, Tesla is expected to expand its presence across other metro cities in India in the near future.
