Uttarakhand Assembly Session: Uniform Civil Code to be tabled in assembly session today | IN POINTS

Uttarakhand Assembly Session: In a significant milestone, the Uttarakhand Government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, has given its approval to the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill. 

This pivotal move, influenced by suggestions from a dedicated government committee, seeks to create uniformity in civil laws throughout Uttarakhand. 


Today, the Uttarakhand Assembly Session is set to table the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) today, following its recent approval by the state cabinet.

If the bill is passed and the law gets implemented, Uttarakhand will be the inaugural state in the country post-Independence to adopt the Uniform Civil Code. 

Various other BJP-governed states, such as Assam and Madhya Pradesh, have also shown interest in enacting comparable laws. Goa has also adhered to a common civil code since its period under Portuguese rule.


ALL ABOUT UNIFORM CIVIL CODE IN POINTS 

  • A Uniform Civil Code (UCC) refers to a set of laws that are applicable uniformly to all citizens, irrespective of their religious beliefs or personal laws. 
  • Uniform Civil Code aims is to create a single legal framework that governs personal matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption for all citizens, replacing the diverse set of personal laws based on different religions and communities.

  • The UCC drafting panel also comprised retired justice Pramod Kohli, social activist Manu Gaur, former Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Shatrughan Singh and Vice Chancellor of Doon University, Surekha Dangwal. The drafting panel was given a total of four extensions.
  • The passage of the UCC Bill in Uttarakhand Assembly Session will mark the fulfillment of a major promise made by the BJP to the people of the state in the run-up to the 2022 Assembly polls.
  • The final draft of the Uniform Civil Code, running into 740 pages in four volumes
  • The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) panel collected 2.33 lakh written suggestions through online submissions and conducted over 70 meetings, engaging with approximately 60,000 individuals during the drafting process.
