US: Indian student in coma after major accident, US grants visa interview after India's appeal
PTC News Desk: The United States has granted visa interview scheduled on Friday at 9 am for an emergency visa to the father of Nilam Shinde who is in critical comastate after sustaining injuries due to accident in California on February 14.
Earlier, the External Affairs Ministry reached out to the US government. According to the reports, travel permits for medical emergencies are normally given quickly and it is unclear what led to the delay in this instance.
The family of the girl in a desperate appeal urged the central government to expediate the visa process after they learnt about their daughter's accident.
Neelam Shinde, 35, is in a critical state as she suffered multiple fractures and injuries to her chest and head after a four wheeler hit her in California on February 14. Her family learnt about her accident two days later.
"We got to know about the accident on February 16 and have been trying for a visa since then. But we haven't got it yet," her father, Tanaji Shinde, said.
In wake of the incident, NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule took to her social media and posted in support of the family and requested External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's help to get Ms Shinde's father a visa.
"Student Neelam Shinde has met with an accident in the USA and is hospitalized in a local hospital. Her father, Tanaji Shinde, from Satara, Maharashtra, India, urgently needs to visit his daughter due to a medical emergency. Tanaji Shinde has applied for an urgent visa to the USA and requires assistance," she wrote.
