Uttarakhand minor 'sexual assault' news: Tensions in Nainital after 65-year-old accused of sexually assaulting minor; shops vandalised
PTC Web Desk: In a shocking incident reported from Nainital, Uttarakhand, the family of a minor girl on Wednesday evening filed a police complaint alleging sexual assault by a 65-year-old man. The incident has led to communal unrest in parts of the city, prompting a strong appeal for calm and unity from authorities.
According to police officials, the alleged incident took place on April 12. The accused, identified as Usman, who works as a contractor, is said to have taken the minor to his vehicle under false pretenses, where the incident reportedly occurred. The girl's mother brought her to the local police station on Wednesday evening, after which a case was registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The man was arrested shortly after.
Later that night, a group gathered near the market where the accused had his office. Some shops and establishments, particularly those belonging to members of the minority community, were damaged. Videos circulating online showed tense scenes, including confrontations with shop staff. Protests also took place in front of a mosque and the police station.
Senior Superintendent of Police Prahlad Meena assured the public that the case is being handled with the utmost seriousness. “We are committed to ensuring justice in this case, and strong legal action will be taken as per the law. At the same time, I urge everyone to remain peaceful and united,” he said. He emphasised the importance of maintaining Nainital’s spirit of harmony and requested that people refrain from spreading or believing in rumours.
Additional police forces have been deployed in the area to prevent further escalation. Superintendent of Police (City) Jagdish Chandra confirmed that officials are closely monitoring sensitive zones, including the market and areas where diverse communities live. “We are speaking with community leaders and traders to ensure everyone’s safety. The market will remain closed for now, and those responsible for last night’s disturbances will be identified and action will be taken,” he said.
The minor has undergone a medical examination and the authorities are awaiting the report. The accused will be presented before the court on Thursday.
