Vulgar chats with friends after marriage amount to mental cruelty: MP High Court

PTC Web Desk: The Madhya Pradesh High Court has ruled that engaging in vulgar conversations with friends after marriage can be considered mental cruelty, emphasising that no husband would tolerate such behaviour from his wife. The court made this observation while rejecting a woman's petition challenging a family court’s decision to grant divorce to her husband on grounds of cruelty.

A Division Bench comprising Justice Vivek Rusia and Justice Gajendra Singh upheld the family court’s verdict, stating that after marriage, both spouses have the right to communicate with friends. However, such conversations should be respectful and dignified, particularly when involving the opposite gender, to avoid causing distress to their partner.

The couple, who married in 2018, had been facing marital discord due to the wife’s alleged interactions with her former lovers. The husband claimed that she frequently engaged in obscene WhatsApp chats with male friends, which led to their strained relationship.

The woman, however, denied the allegations, arguing that her phone was hacked by her husband to fabricate evidence against her. She also accused him of demanding Rs 25 lakh as dowry and violating her right to privacy.

Despite her claims, the court found substantial evidence supporting the husband's allegations. Even the woman's father acknowledged that she used to talk to male friends frequently. Taking these factors into account, the High Court upheld the divorce granted by the lower court.
