NIA chief Dinkar Gupta holds meeting with Amit Shah on Udaipur, Amravati killings

New Delhi, July 4: Days after the Ministry of Home Affairs asked the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to take over the investigation into the brutal murders in Rajasthan's Udaipur and Maharashtra's Amravati, NIA chief Dinkar Gupta met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah at his national capital office on Monday.

Kanhaiyalal Kumar, a tailor, was beheaded in broad daylight by two men inside his shop in Udaipur on June 28, while Umesh Kolhe, the owner of a chemist shop, was murdered by three persons in Amravati on June 21. A district court in Amravati ordered the key accused and the mastermind in the murder case, Irfan Sheikh, to be held in police custody until July 7. On Sunday, Amravati police in Nagpur nabbed the accused, named Irfan Sheikh. Mudassir Ahmad (22), Shah Rukh Pathan (25), Abdul Thoufique (24), Shoaib Khan (22), Atib Rashid (22), and Yusufkan Bahadur Khan have been named as the six accused (44).

So far, investigators believe the chemist was murdered in retaliation for a social media post supporting former Bjp leader Nupur Sharma, who made controversial remarks about the Prophet during a television debate.

The assailants in the Udaipur case identified themselves on the video as Riyaz Akhtari and Ghouse Mohammad. In the video, Riyaz is seen attacking Kanhaiya Lal, 47, with a sharp-edged weapon, while Ghouse records the incident on his phone.

According to reports, the victim recently published a social media post in support of Nupur Sharma, a former BJP leader who made controversial remarks about the Prophet Mohammad. The NIA claimed on Thursday that it suspects the role of a "terror gang, not a terror outfit." The anti-terror agency, on the other hand, made it obvious that the horrible killing was the work of a bigger gang, and that it was not the work of just two people, who were arrested by state police after the incident.
