Pak literary society honours Moosewala, poet Surjit Patar with 'Waris Shah International Award'

Punjabi Virsa, a Pakistan-based Punjabi literary society, on Sunday honoured late Indian singer Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu aka Sidhu Moose Wala with the Waris Shah International Award.



Sidhu Moosewala, who was shot dead on May 29, was a popular Punjabi singer on both sides of the border and in the diaspora. The Pak-based Punjabi literary society honoured the Indian singer with the award posthumously during a ceremony at Sheikhupura, the birthplace of Sufi poet Waris Shah.

Thousands of Moosewala fans gathered at the Waris Shah Complex to witness the "Waris Shah International Award" ceremony. There was also a huge crowd of Punjabi writers and singers.

Waris Shah International Award was established in 2000 to honour Punjabi writers and litterateurs who work to promote Punjabi culture and language. Sidhu Moosewala is the first singer to receive it. Earlier, the award has been conferred upon Punjabi writer Amrita Pritam.
