New Delhi, December 23: Pankaj Gupta, National Secretary of the Aam Aadmi Party, announced the names of the party's Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and four members of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi's Standing Committee on Friday.

Shelly Oberoi, a councillor from Ward 86 Patel Nagar, has been named Mayor. Aaley Muhammad Iqbal, a councillor from Ward 76 Matia Mahal, was nominated for the position of Deputy Mayor.

On January 6, 2023, an election will be held to select Delhi's next Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

These names were approved following discussions in the AAP's Political Affairs Committee, the party's decision-making body.

Pankaj Gupta, speaking at the press conference, stated, "The PAC meeting was held at the CM's residence this morning. Six names were discussed in this meeting. Names were fixed for four standing committees, one for the mayor and one for the deputy mayor."

"The name of Aaley Muhammad Iqbal has been fixed for the post of Deputy Mayor, who has been elected councillor from Ward 76 Matia Mahal. At the same time, the name of Shelly Oberoi, who is a councillor from Ward 86 Patel Nagar, has been fixed for the post of Mayor," Gupta added.

Oberoi is a first-term Delhi councillor from East Patel Nagar. The 39-year-old former professor ran from East Patel Nagar, the home turf of former Delhi BJP chief Adesh Gupta, and defeated him.

Aaley Muhammad, the AAP's candidate for Deputy Mayor, set a record by receiving the most votes in the election. By 17,134 votes, he defeated Congress candidate Mohammad Hamid.

Aaley Muhammad is the son of Shoaib Iqbal, the AAP's current Matiamahal MLA.

According to the source, the deadline for filing nominations for the January 6 mayoral elections is December 27.

The victory of the AAP candidates for Mayor and Deputy Mayor is being considered because the party has a majority in the corporation and the BJP has stated that it will not participate in these elections.
