BJP’s Sirsa candidate Rohtash Jangra withdraws nomination; party likely to support Gopal Kanda

Haryana Assembly elections 2024: Rohtash Jangra, the ruling BJP’s candidate for the Sirsa Assembly seat, announced his withdrawal from the election. It hints that the BJP may be planning to back Haryana Lokhit Party chief Gopal Kanda, who is the incumbent MLA from Sirsa.

Rohtash Jangra said, "I have withdrawn my nomination in the interest of the state and the country... We need to ensure a 'Congress-mukt Haryana.'" When asked if his withdrawal was in support of Gopal Kanda, Jangra said Kanda had supported the BJP government for the past five years, adding that the decision was made for the development of Sirsa.

With Jangra’s withdrawal, the BJP will contest 89 out of the 90 Assembly seats in Haryana, leaving the Congress to contest the remaining seat, Bhiwani, in alliance with the CPM. The BJP released its final list of candidates last week, including Jangra for Sirsa.

The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), which is allied with the BSP for these elections, announced its support for Kanda in Sirsa. Polling for Haryana’s 90 Assembly seats is scheduled for October 5, with results to be announced on October 8. The BJP aims for a third consecutive victory, while the Congress is hoping to capitalise on anti-incumbency sentiments.
