Rajya Sabha byelection for Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir on Oct 24; counting to be held on same day

PTC Web Desk: The Election Commission on Wednesday announced the by-elections to fill four Rajya Sabha seats in Jammu and Kashmir and one seat in Punjab on October 24. The elections and counting will take place on the same day.

All the four J&K seats have been vacant since February 2021. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjeev Arora had resigned from his Rajya Sabha seat after winning the Ludhiana West Assembly byelection in Punjab. Elected as a first-time MP on April 10, 2022, Arora’s tenure in the Upper House was originally set to continue until April 9, 2028.

A Ludhiana-based businessman with a background in exports, Arora secured the Assembly bypoll victory with a margin of over 10,000 votes, defeating Congress candidate Bharat Bhushan Ashu. His win has triggered a Rajya Sabha by-election in Punjab to fill the vacant seat.
