End of road for Mamata Banerjee as public mandates BJP for Bengal: Key factors behind fierce battle

PTC News Desk: As results continue to unfold in the high-stakes West Bengal Assembly elections, the close contest between the Bhartiya Janata Party and All India Trinamool Congress has garnered national attention.

The battle of Bengal is seen as the referendum on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's governance vs BJP 's extensive push to expand its footprints in TMC strongholds.

A key highlight os the battle is the close contest between both the parties in Bhabanipur, a consituency closely associated with Mamata Banerjee and key stronghold of TMC.

Security remained one of the crucial concers during the election campaign with multi-layer deployment at counting centres and strict monitoring protocols, including CCTV surveillance. Authorities have also banned victory rallies to maintain law and order, underlining the sensitive nature of the electoral process.

In the early stages of counting, especially with postal ballots, initial trends often set the tone but don’t always reflect the final outcome. This makes the BJP’s early leads noteworthy, though not conclusive. In West Bengal, counting trends have historically shifted as rounds of Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) votes are added.

Another key aspect is the battle of narratives. The BJP has projected the election as a push for change, while the TMC has focused on regional identity and welfare schemes to strengthen its support base. Leaders from both sides have expressed strong confidence even as the counting continues.

Beyond the numbers, the election carries deep political significance. A TMC victory would mean a fourth straight term for Mamata Banerjee, cementing her hold over the state. On the other hand, a BJP win would be historic, marking its first-ever government in West Bengal.

As the counting moves forward, the Bengal verdict remains one of the most closely watched contests in the country, with implications that extend well beyond the state.
