Custodial death: Army officer on deputation suspended in connection with BSF jawan's death in NCB custody
PTC News Desk: The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has suspended an Army officer in conncection with BSF jawan Jaswinder Singh's death in NCB custody in Amritsar. Jaswinder had been arrested by the agency in a drug-related case.
A senior NCB official confirmed that Major Amit Kumar, serving as Assistant Director, was transferred right after being suspended. He is the second official from the agency to face suspension in this case. Earlier, the bureau had suspended investigating officer Akash Rai, who was posted in Jammu, and also launched a departmental inquiry against him.
Jaswinder Singh's autopsy report has revealed 34 injuries on his body, raising questions on sequence of circumstances that led to his death. He reporedly died after his health deteriorated during questioning by the NCB in Amritsar, Punjab, the police had said in March.
According to the report, Jaswinder Singh, a resident of Jammu was brought to Amritsar for questioning by the NCB, where he died under mysterious circumstances.
The postmortem report, conducted by doctors at the district civil hospital in Amritsar, was shared by the victim's family and Sarabjit Singh Verka, chief investigator of the Punjab Human Rights Organisation (PHRO).
His family had alleged that the NCB team assaulted Jaswinder, while the agency said in a statement that he died after suffering ‘two cardiac events’.
