BJP set to return to power in Assam; Himanta Biswa Sarma emerges as key leader

PTC Web Desk: The BJP is heading towards a clear majority in the Assam Assembly elections as counting continues. This marks a significant shift, as in both 2016 and 2021, the party had formed the government with the support of regional allies.

This election is particularly important as it is the first time Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma contested while leading the government. His active campaigning across the state is being seen as a major factor behind the party’s strong performance.

Sarma, who was earlier associated with the Congress for nearly 15 years, has played a decisive role in shaping political outcomes in Assam over the years. His governance, focused on infrastructure development and welfare schemes, appears to have connected with voters.

Political observers believe that a mix of development initiatives and strong messaging on cultural identity helped the BJP gain wider support. Projects such as roads, bridges, and investment plans, along with beneficiary schemes, were highlighted during the campaign.

Experts also note that despite facing criticism, Sarma’s image as a leader who delivers results has strengthened. His growing influence within the party and the region is expected to increase further after these results.

Meanwhile, the Congress has struggled to maintain its position in the state. Analysts say leadership shifts and internal changes have contributed to its declining performance.

As per the Election Commission of India data available at 1:45 pm, Sarma was leading from Jalukbari constituency with over 61,000 votes, maintaining a large margin against Congress candidate Bidisha Neog.
