Ludhiana: Miffed over ticket denial, Jasbir Singh Khangura quits AAP

PTC Web Desk: Ludhiana witnessed a political earthquake on Wednesday as Jasbir Singh Khangura resigned from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), marking a significant shift in the region's political dynamics. Jassi Khangura was earlier with the Congress. He was reportedly upset over not getting party ticket from Ludhiana. The party has fielded Ashok Pappi Prashar, sitting MLA, for Ludhiana Lok Sabha seat.

Notably, Khangura had surrendered his British citizenship and returned India from the UK and became active in Punjab politics. His political career began with a triumphant victory in 2007 when he won the Qila Raipur seat of Punjab as a Congress candidate. This victory, by a margin of 10,876 votes, was a watershed moment, breaking the dominance of the Shiromani Akali Dal in a seat the Congress had never before claimed.

In 2012, Khangura contested from Dakha after the Qila Raipur seat was abolished. Although he did not secure a win, his impressive tally of 55,820 votes set a record that no Congress candidate has matched in subsequent elections. This solidified his position as a strong contender in Punjab politics.

After a period of reflection, Jassi Khangura made the decision to join AAP, citing disillusionment with the Congress. "The Congress has now become a party of opportunists and power-hungry people," he had remarked. "The poor and common people of Punjab are paying the price for the Congress leaders’ fight for power," he had opined.

However, the political landscape continues to shift as Khangura now announces his departure from AAP, citing reasons of dissatisfaction. This move has sparked curiosity and speculation among political observers, wondering about the next steps in his political journey.
