PTC News Desk: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla accepted the no-confidence motion against the government moved by Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on behalf of the opposition alliance I.N.D.I.A on Wednesday.

Opposition parties from the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) alliance have taken a major step in their effort to push PM, Modi, to address in Parliament the ongoing conflict in Manipur, which has brought the monsoon session to a halt. They resolved on Tuesday to file a no-confidence motion against the BJP government, with a particular emphasis on the situation in the northeastern state.

On Wednesday, the Speaker asked about the number of members who supported the motion after Gogoi moved it. He admitted the motion and stated that the time of the debate would be determined later. After the Speaker accepted the demand for a no-confidence motion, the House resumed normal operations. Members of the opposition weighed in on the bills introduced by the government.

Since the start of the monsoon session of Parliament on July 20, the two Houses have been adjourned several times.

Gogoi is an Assamese MP who represents the Kaliabor constituency in the northeast area.

The Bharat Rashtra Samithi, which has nine Lok Sabha members, has also filed a no-confidence motion against the government.

What is a no-confidence motion?

A no-confidence motion is a parliamentary procedure that allows the opposition to call the government's majority and ability to govern into question. If the motion passes, the government has to resign.

Who can introduce a motion of no confidence?

A motion of no-confidence can be introduced by any Lok Sabha member. The proposal, however, must be supported by at least 50 members of the House.

How is a motion of no confidence moved?

A no-confidence motion must be in writing and signed by the member who proposes it. The motion must be filed to the Speaker on any day when the Lok Sabha is in session.

What happens once a vote of no confidence is moved?

The Lok Sabha's Speaker will decide whether to admit the motion for discussion and debate. If the motion is admitted, the Speaker will set the date and time for the debate. The Speaker may allocate time for debate on the motion (under sub-rules (2) and (3) of Lok Sabha Rules 198).

How is a motion of no confidence debated?

The Lok Sabha will discuss the no-confidence motion. The motion will be moved by the member who proposed it, and the government will respond. The opposition parties will then be allowed to speak on the motion.

How is a vote on a no-confidence resolution conducted?

The Lok Sabha will vote on the no-confidence resolution following the debate. The proposal will be approved if it receives the support of a majority of House members.

What happens if the government wins the no-confidence vote?

If the government wins the no-confidence vote, the motion is defeated and the government retains power.
