Nitin Nabin takes over as BJP national president, succeeds JP Nadda; becomes youngest leader ever to hold top post

PTC Web Desk: Nitin Nabin on Tuesday formally assumed charge as the national president of the BJP, succeeding JP Nadda, who is currently serving as a Union minister. At 45, Nabin becomes the youngest leader ever to hold the top organisational post in the party.

The change of guard took place at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, and several other senior leaders from across the country.

Ahead of officially taking charge, Nabin visited prominent religious sites in the national capital, including Jhandewalan Temple, Valmiki Temple, Hanuman Temple in Connaught Place, and Gurdwara Bangla Sahib. He was accompanied by Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva and Delhi Minister Parvesh Saheb Singh Verma.

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has provided Z-category security to the new BJP chief based on an Intelligence Bureau threat perception report. The security cover includes CRPF commandos and was granted a few days prior to his formal appointment.

Nabin was elected unopposed as BJP president after emerging as the sole candidate in the party’s organisational election, the BJP Central Election Authority said in an official statement. Prime Minister Modi, along with senior leaders including JP Nadda, Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh and Nitin Gadkari, proposed his candidature.

His elevation comes more than a month after he was appointed the party’s working president. At the time, he was serving as a minister handling road construction and urban development in the Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government, a position he later resigned from.

Who is Nitin Nabin

A five-time undefeated MLA from the Bankipur Assembly constituency in Bihar, Nabin is the son of late BJP leader and former legislator Nabin Kishore Prasad Sinha. He first won a bypoll in 2006 by a margin of nearly 60,000 votes and retained his seat repeatedly with decisive victories, including a margin of over 51,000 votes in the last Assembly election.

An RSS-trained leader, Nabin gained national attention for his organisational role in the 2023 Chhattisgarh Assembly elections, where the BJP returned to power by defeating the Congress government led by Bhupesh Baghel. In the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections, the party went on to win 10 of the state’s 11 seats.

Born in Ranchi, Nabin is married to Deepmala Shrivastava and has two children.

Congratulating Nabin, Prime Minister Modi said the BJP’s organisational election process reflected the party’s democratic ethos and worker-centric ideology. He described the leadership transition as a continuation of the party’s tradition rooted in experience, discipline and national service.

Former BJP president JP Nadda expressed confidence in his successor, calling Nabin a young, energetic and experienced leader who would take the party forward at a faster pace. He also thanked party workers and colleagues for their support during his tenure.
