Nitish Kumar's alliance shift sparks initial action against RJD in Bihar Assembly

PTC News Desk: In the wake of Nitish Kumar's defection to the NDA alliance and subsequent assumption of the Chief Minister's role, Bihar assembly speaker Awadh Bihari Choudhary, an RJD leader, is now facing a no-confidence motion. Several leaders within the BJP-led NDA coalition have sought his removal in response to Kumar's move away from the Mahagathbandhan.

After Nitish Kumar transitioned to the NDA, prominent figures from the BJP-led alliance, including Nand Kishore Yadav, Tarkishore Prasad (former Deputy Chief Minister), Jitan Ram Manjhi (HAM chief and former Chief Minister), and JD(U)'s Vinay Kumar Choudhary, Ratnesh Sada, along with other MLAs, have submitted a no-confidence motion notice to the assembly secretary, advocating for the dismissal of Awadh Bihari Choudhary, who belongs to the RJD.

Nitish Kumar's departure from the Mahagathbandhan, which included the RJD and the Congress, marked the end of days of political uncertainty. He was sworn in as the Chief Minister for the NDA alliance, achieving this milestone for the record ninth time. Notably, Kumar had joined the Mahagathbandhan in August 2022 after severing ties with the BJP, citing accusations of the party attempting to "split" his own.

As a result of Kumar's move, the NDA in Bihar now commands a total of 128 MLAs, surpassing the majority mark by six. In contrast, the Mahagathbandhan, comprising the RJD, Congress, and Left parties, holds 114 MLAs. The Bihar assembly, with a total of 243 seats, sees the RJD as the single largest party with 79 MLAs, followed by BJP with 78, JD(U) with 45, and Congress with 19. The Left parties contribute 16 MLAs, while HAM and AIMIM hold four and one, respectively. Additionally, there is one independent MLA in the assembly.
