PM Modi slams Kejriwal over 'Sheeshmahal' renovation, says BJP focuses on 'har ghar jal' and not jacuzzis
PTC Web Desk: A day before the crucial Delhi Assembly elections on February 5, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a veiled swipe at former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, accusing certain leaders of prioritising "jacuzzis and stylish showers" over essential amenities for the common people.
Speaking in the Lok Sabha during the discussion on the Motion of Thanks on the President's Address, PM Modi renewed his 'sheeshmahal' jibe, criticising Arvind Kejriwal over the alleged extravagant renovation of his official residence while in office.
PM Modi said his government's priority had always been ensuring access to water and housing for the poor, whereas other leaders have indulged in luxury. "I could have built a sheeshmahal, but for me, the dream was to provide permanent homes for my countrymen," he said.
The BJP has consistently targeted Arvind Kejriwal over allegations of extravagant spending on the Delhi Chief Minister's bungalow at 6 Flagstaff Road, Civil Lines. According to the party, an inventory list prepared by the Public Works Department (PWD) revealed the presence of luxury fittings and high-end appliances in the residence.
BJP leader Amit Malviya claimed that the inventory list included: 75 Bose ceiling speakers installed in various sections, including kitchens, toilets, washing areas, and gyms. A 934-litre multi-door refrigerator with AI and advanced technological features. A 73-litre touchscreen steam oven and other high-end kitchen appliances and 55 to 77-inch TVs worth Rs 73 lakh. Luxury installations like jacuzzis, saunas, and full-body massagers estimated to cost Rs 20 lakh.
The allegations surfaced amid Kejriwal’s resignation as Delhi Chief Minister in October, after which Atishi was chosen to lead the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in the national capital.
PM Modi’s remarks on Kejriwal’s residence come in the wake of the BJP’s sustained campaign against the former Chief Minister, linking him to corruption and misuse of public funds. The party has repeatedly alleged that while the common man struggles for basic services, Kejriwal spent taxpayer money on a lavish lifestyle.
During a rally in January, PM Modi had similarly emphasised that while he was committed to building houses for the underprivileged, some leaders were more interested in extravagant renovations.
