Punjab to conduct Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls ahead of Assembly elections 2027

PTC Web Desk: Ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections 2027, the Election Commission will carry out a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across the state to correct errors and improve voter data accuracy. The revision exercise in Punjab is scheduled to begin during February–March, officials confirmed.

Preparations for the SIR have already started, with the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Punjab issuing directions to district election authorities to address discrepancies in voter lists before the formal revision begins.

According to official sources, the decision was discussed during a virtual meeting held by the Election Commission of India (ECI) with electoral officers from all states. During the meeting, the commission indicated that Punjab’s SIR would commence early next year. Following these instructions, the CEO Punjab has ordered immediate corrective action to improve the quality of electoral rolls.

The CEO Punjab has directed District Electoral Officers to prioritise polling booths where the electoral mapping percentage is below 50 percent. Authorities have been asked to verify voter details and correct discrepancies to ensure that mapping accuracy improves significantly before the SIR process begins.

Electoral mapping percentage reflects how many voters in a constituency have their details, such as name, address, age, photograph, and polling booth, accurately verified and digitally mapped. A higher percentage indicates a more reliable and error-free voter list.

To speed up the correction process, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) have been relieved from their regular departmental duties for five days, from January 30 to February 3. During this period, BLOs will rectify errors found in the coloured electoral rolls prepared earlier.

Common issues identified include blurred or black-and-white photographs, tilted images and typographical errors in voter names and personal details. BLOs have been instructed to ensure all such mistakes are corrected within the stipulated time.

Why SIR is important

The Special Intensive Revision aims to add newly eligible voters, remove names of deceased or shifted individuals and eliminate duplicate entries from electoral rolls. Election officials say the process will significantly enhance transparency and prevent the inclusion of fake or ineligible voters.

How to check your name in the voter list online

Voters can verify their names online by following these steps:

Visit the Election Commission website at electoralsearch.eci.gov.in

Click on Special Intensive Revision (SIR) 2026

Enter your EPIC number or name

Fill in the captcha code and click Search

If your name exists, details such as district, assembly constituency, and polling booth will appear

If the name does not appear, the portal will display “No Result Found.”

What to do if your name is missing or incorrect

If a voter’s name is missing from the draft list, incorrectly entered or has never been registered, they can submit Form 6 online or through their BLO. If details are incorrect but the name exists, Form 8 should be submitted for corrections. Officials have advised voters to remain vigilant until the final electoral roll is published.

Additional Deputy Commissioner-cum-Additional District Electoral Officer Rakesh Kumar said improving the electoral mapping percentage is a top priority. He added that efforts are underway to correct typing errors and ensure that voter photographs are properly uploaded to enhance the credibility of the electoral rolls.
