SAD announces boycott of vice presidential poll on Sept 9, cites flood crisis in Punjab
PTC Web Desk: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Monday announced that it will boycott the upcoming vice presidential election on September 9, citing the ongoing unprecedented floods in Punjab as the primary reason. In an official statement, the party criticised both the state and central governments for failing to provide adequate relief to flood-affected residents.
According to SAD, nearly one-third of Punjab is submerged, with houses and crops destroyed. The party described the situation as a man-made tragedy resulting from the state government’s negligence and incompetence. It further claimed that neither the Punjab government nor the central authorities have stepped forward to assist citizens in need.
The SAD expressed deep respect for their dedication and affirmed the party’s active involvement in supporting flood victims. “While the country prepares for the vice presidential election, the people of Punjab remain devastated and angry, with neither the state nor central government offering assistance,” the party said, adding that SAD represents the voice and sentiments of Punjab’s people.
In light of the crisis, the party has decided to boycott the vice presidential poll scheduled for tomorrow, emphasising the need to prioritise relief and rehabilitation efforts in the flood-hit state.
