Zoram People's Movement triumphs in Mizoram polls; Lalduhoma set to take oath as CM

PTC Web Desk: The Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), led by Lalduhoma, achieved a resounding victory in Mizoram, securing 27 out of the 40 Assembly seats, thus displacing the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF). The swearing-in ceremony for newly elected Chief Minister Lalduhoma is scheduled for Friday, December 8.

On Tuesday, newly elected MLAs of the Zoram People's Movement will convene at Lalduhoma's residence in Aizawl at 8 pm. Following their landslide win in the Mizoram elections, ZPM leaders, including Baryl Vanneihsangi, Mizoram's youngest woman MLA, took part in a worship service at the party office in Aizawl.

About Lalduhoma

Lalduhoma, a 74-year-old patriarch of the Zoram People's Movement, commenced his career as an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, serving in Goa before being assigned to oversee the security of then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in Delhi. After leaving his service, he founded the ZPM and made history by entering the Lok Sabha in 1984. However, his political journey encountered a hurdle when he became the first MP to face disqualification under the anti-defection law. Undeterred, Lalduhoma persisted in his work in Mizoram and gained prominence.

In the recent Assembly elections, he emerged as the Chief Ministerial candidate of the ZNP-led Zoram People's Movement coalition.

The electoral process in Mizoram took place on November 7 for the 40 Assembly seats, with the vote counting completed on December 4. Subsequent to the MNF's defeat, Zoramthanga resigned from his position, submitting his resignation to Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati at Raj Bhavan.
