AAP MLA Kulwant Singh's son Sarabjit Singh elected Mohali Mayor, RP Sharma Senior Deputy Mayor
PTC News Desk: Sarabjit Singh Samana, son of MLA Kulwant Singh has been appointed Mohali mayor. RP Sharma was elected Senior Deputy Mayor, while Harpal Channi was chosen as Deputy Mayor.
After the election, Sarabjit Singh was formally seated in the mayor's chair by AAP Punjab president Aman Arora, MLA Kulwant Singh and Dr. Sunny Ahluwalia, who also congratulated him by offering sweets. Samana later led a roadshow to celebrate his victory. His election is seen as further strengthening the influence of the Samana family in Mohali's political landscape.
The development is considered a setback for AAP leader Dr. Sunny Ahluwalia, who had long been viewed as one of the strongest contenders for the mayor's post. Ahluwalia is believed to have a strong hold within the party organisation and is regarded as being close to AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal.
To ensure party unity and prevent any division during the election, AAP Punjab chief Aman Arora personally attended the Municipal Corporation office.
Before the mayoral election, the Indian National Congress boycotted the proceedings, while the lone councillor from the Shiromani Akali Dal staged a walkout.
Special security and confidentiality measures were put in place during the meeting. Councillors were required to deposit their mobile phones at the entrance of the Municipal Corporation building, and they were allowed to enter the House only after their attendance was recorded.
